What is Title I?

Title I is a provision of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), signed into law back in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The ESEA funds primary and secondary education, promotes equal education access, and helps to close the education gap between high- and low-income students. Funding under Title I targets schools and school districts where a high percentage of students are from low-income families, and the purpose of this funding is to help schools establish programs to help those students—programs that wouldn’t be possible without some outside funding.
